Most criminal justice experts believe that once children enter the juvenile
corrections system, many are unlikely to be rehabilitated. By reaching youth
before they turn to a life of crime, communities can reduce juvenile delinquency
and, more importantly, attack adult crime at its roots. The costs of both juvenile
and adult incarceration can be reduced as well. Statistics show that 81 percent
of people in jail are dropouts. There is not only a human cost, but a financial
one. For those incarcerated, the state loses millions of dollars in social services,
lost wages and taxes.
Ventana del Soul is an early intervention program with volunteer and service
initiatives designed to provide youth with mentors, protection through safe
places and activities, a nurturing atmosphere, caring teachers, and the opportunity
for adults to help youth through community service. Ventana del Soul works with
young people to help them connect to their community while giving them job skills
training.
